Glass Quantity Calculator
Work out how much glass to allow for your panel, including extra for cutting.
- 01 Step 1. Enter the finished width and height in inches.
- 02 Step 2. Choose a cutting-waste allowance, allowing more for complex cuts, directional texture or recuts.
- 03 Step 3. Read the square footage and divide that allowance between the glass colours in your pattern.

For a 12 × 16 inch panel, including 25% extra for cutting. This is the total across all colours.
Use your estimate to plan your glass
The result is the total glass area across all colours, including your cutting allowance. It is not the amount to buy in each colour.
- Group your pattern pieces by colour. Use the colour key to see which pieces share the same glass.
- Arrange the largest templates first. Check that each one fits the actual sheet you plan to buy, including any directional texture.
- Leave room for cuts and recuts. Increase the waste allowance for awkward layouts or extra practice pieces. The starting 25% is an example you can change.
For example, a 12 × 24 inch panel covers 2 square feet. Adding 25% gives a total allowance of 2.50 square feet. You still need to plan how that area is split between colours and available sheet sizes.
How the estimate is calculated
Width × height ÷ 144 gives the panel area in square feet. We then multiply that area by (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100).
This estimates glass area only. Foil, solder, framing and support need to be planned separately.
